JOHN GLENN - Feb. 6, 2010 - If Saturday looked like a rerun for John Glenn's wrestling team, in many ways it was.
The Bobcats won their third straight North East Michigan Conference title, their second consecutive NEMC tournament title and had six wrestlers win at least their second individual titles while dominating the leave finals tournament.
Glenn racked up 220 points, while Ogemaw Heights (161) edged Pinconning (157.5) for third. Standish-Sterling (90) finished fourth ahead of Whittemore-Prescott (65) as the five squad finished in the same order as their regular-season dual meet finish.
For the Bobcats it was as much a coronation as anything, as Brandon Wreszinski (189 pounds) became the fourth wrestler in league history (and in the last decade) to win his fourth individual title. Ryan LaFlure (171) won his third, missing his chance to join the elite four-title club thanks to an injury that held him out of the tournament his sophomore year.
Zach Hughes (119), D.J. Lapan (152), Devin McCulloh (160) and Nick Moore (215) all won their second titles, while Kyle Mullins (103) and Anthony Hughes (112) made it eight of 12 individual titles for Glenn.
"We started a bit rusty today, but I was a lot happier with our execution after the first round," said Glenn coach Jerry LaFlure. "We picked it up. We had some good wins, but made a lot of mistakes. We're a little bit banged up, but everyone is at end of the season."
Glenn dominated the day with 12 wrestlers in the 14 championship matches, winning eight.
Ogemaw and Pinny had nearly identical days, with each earning five third place finishes and two fourth place. The Falcons went 3-3 in championship matches to 2-4 for the Spartans.
Zach Burton (285), Nathan Wynkoop (125) and Chris Hebert (130) won titles for the Falcons.
"We finished where I hoped we would, which isn't bad considering some of our injury and eligibility issues," said Ogemaw coach Darryl Keeton. "We filled some weights with kids who have practiced hard all year but hadn't had a chance to wrestle varsity very much or at all, and to have them come through was good.
"To finish ahead of Pinny we not only needed some wins in the final round, but we got some help from Glenn and Whittemore. I'm proud of the kids who stuck it out, for their positive attitudes."
Pinny's Charlie Burch won his third league title (140), while Tyler Espitia (145) to highlight the Spartans' day.
"We were hoping for second, but it didn't pan out that way," said Spartans' coach Wayne Purtell. "To finish short of that by 3.5 points, we were pretty much there. It wouldn't have taken much.
"It was the first time in my five years that we were able to put 14 kids out there (and fill every weight class). So we had a couple of kids where it was their first time wrestling a varsity match."
Standish-Sterling's Bryan Jones (135) won the Panthers their lone individual title for the day, but coach Roy Morrison wasn't unhappy with his team's performance.
"With who we brought, we did better than I expected," he said. "Bryan winning was nice, and Jesse (Bashor) hung in there with Wreszinski pretty well. Kayla Lafleur at 112 wrestled very well even though she didn't win either match. She was able to get on top a couple of times and made them work for it.
"If we'd have had a full squad, we'd probably have done better."
Whittemore-Prescott's Dan Seefeld said that for the most part, his young squad gave him what he was looking for on the day. Nick Sholler (145) was the lone Cardinal to reach a championship match.
"I was real proud of how Nick wrestled," Seefeld said. "We had some guys to day who really showed a lot of heart and have a lot of potential for next year.
"We had a couple of different weight classes that I thought might have gone a little differently today."
All five teams wrestle in both team and individual competition this coming week.
On Thursday in Division 2 at Ogemaw Heights, the Falcons take on the winner of an opening-round showdown between Gaylord and John Glenn. Gaylord eliminated the Bobcats in from team regional competition last season, but Glenn won this year's one dual between the two.
"We have a lot of work to do if we want to beat them again," LaFlure said. "(Gaylord's) Jerry LaJoie is an excellent coach. To beat them twice in a year will be very difficult."
Also on Thursday, Whittemore-Prescott travels to Mio AuSable in Division 4, where they will be joined by Sanford-Meridian.
On Wednesday, Pinconning hosts a Division 3 district with Standish-Sterling and Essexville Garber. Former NEMC member Oscoda travels to Roscommon in another Division 3 team district.
On Saturday, individual competition will be at Gaylord for Division 2, Standish-Sterling for Division 3 (with Oscoda heading to Benzie Central in another Div. 3 district) and Manton in Division 4. |
