STANDISH-STERLING - Feb. 25, 2010 - Standish-Sterling's girls survived a pair of injuries and a surprising performance by John Glenn on Thursday to end the regular season on a winning note with a 59-53 victory over the Bobcats.
Glenn took a 53-52 lead with three minutes to play, but SSC scored the final seven points of the game.
"When it was 'winning time' we executed well," said Panthers coach Kevin King. "We did what we had to do defensively and made our free throws.
"I was glad that we were tested and found a way to win. Even after 20 games you can learn something about yourselves, and I think we did that tonight."
SSC took a 28-25 lead at the half, but lost guards Allison Collier and Emily Meschke to injuries, both in the final 90 seconds of the second quarter. King said while neither injury appeared to be severe, he was uncertain of their status for Monday's district tournament opener against Gladwin.
Glenn's Stephanie Labelle also was hurt late in the fourth quarter.
King said that in addition to his team's injury issues, the Bobcats' play belied their 4-16 record.
"They just battled," he said. "At their place they couldn't handle our press, but tonight they dealt with it pretty well. They've struggled this year, but they played us tough tonight and showed a lot of character."
Abbye Gulvas scored 12 points -- all in the second half -- as did Christina Proulx to lead the Panthers (15-5, 7-3). Paige Raes and Kelsye Mielke added eight points apiece. SSC finished in a second-place tie with Ogemaw Heights after the Falcons' loss at Tawas Area Thursday night.
Labelle paced Glenn (4-16, 3-7) with 15, with Bri Sahr adding 13. |
