HALE - Jan. 28, 2010 - On a night when the ball seemed to disfavor going through the net, the Hale girls basketball team was able to make enough plays down the stretch to pull out a 42-37 North Star League victory at home over AuGres-Sims.
Hale led 27-26 after three quarters and held AGS without a basket in the fourth quarter. But the Eagles got six points from Kaitlin Scott and a 3-pointer from Lyndsay Weaver to take the lead, and two critical free throws by Laura Sidebottom offset 10 misses at the line by the Eagles in the fourth quarter.
"We were stalling (but) weren't making our free throws when the fouls came," said Hale coach Shannon Chrivia. "We made an adjustment and got the ball in Laura's hands and when she was fouled she made the free throws."
The game turned on a play on which Scott scored and Stacey Eno drew a foul under the basket. Eno missed her free throws, but Scott got the rebound and scored again to increase Hale's lead to seven points.
"The game (was) a complete team effort," Chrivia said. "Who is coming on strong for me defensively though is Danelle Laszlo. She is picking up the aggressiveness we lost when we lost Kelsey Reilly to a knee injury."
The Wolverines got to the line 36 times but made just 15, while Hale was 7-of-18 at the line.
Emily Lutz finished with 15 points for the Wolverines (5-11, 2-8 North Star League), but no one else had more than five.
Scott and Sidebottom each had 10 and Weaver added eight for the Eagles (3-9, 2-8).
"Laura and Kaitlin continue to be very solid on both ends of the court," Chrivia said. "I also have to give credit to Lindsay; she played a very solid game for us at point...
"It was a much needed win ... Hopefully we will build some confidence with this and continue to improve our efforts in the games to come."
