MIO AuSABLE - Mar. 1, 2010 -
An underdog Atlanta Huskies squad put up a fight for the better part of 14 minutes Monday night against heavily favored Fairview, but a 10-2 run to end the first half of Monday's district opener in Mio gave the Eagles more than enough for a 50-23 opening round playoff win.
“It is hard to sustain with six players,” Atlanta head coach Jon Wells said of his team's early solid play. “They have to play a lot of minutes. The last two minutes of the first half hurt us. They carried it over to the second half.”
Fairview used two first quarter baskets by Kayla Weaver to take an 8-2 lead after the first, but held a slim 8-6 lead late in the opening quarter.
Weaver sparked the Eagle run with two free throws to extend its lead to 10-6, which she promptly followed up with two more baskets to put Fairview up 14-6.
After a put-back by Jaelynn Handrich put the Eagles up 16-6, Atlanta's Hollie Nicholas scored a basket to bring them back within eight. Weaver scored the final basket of the half to put Fairview up 18-8 at the break.
The Eagles picked up where they left off in the third quarter, outscoring Atlanta 15-4 in the frame, aided by another eight points by Weaver.
Atlanta scored 11 points in the final period, though Fairview scored 17 to extend its lead to the 50-23 final.
Fairview was led by Weaver's 21 points, with Handrich adding 10, Camille Szubelak put in six and Nikki Shkreli had five.
Atlanta was led by Nicholas with 14 points, while April Neilsen had four.
The loss ends the Huskies' season with a 0-18 record, while Fairivew (15-5) plays Wednesday against district host Mio (11-9). |
