ALCONA - Mar. 4, 2010 - Alcona threw up 42 points in the second half of Thursday's season-ender with Fairview on the way to defeating the Eagles 74-53.

The Tigers led 32-26 at halftime largely due to a 12-point second quarter by Alex Cole. Cole added eight more points in the third quarter, but Bryan Layton added another nine points and Matt Mullen had six of his career-high 21 points as the Tigers pulled away.

"We played a very good second half," said Alcona coach Seth Coffing. "Probably the best two quarters that we have played all year.

"It was the last regular-season home game for our seniors and they stepped up and played extremely well. We created a lot of easy baskets because of our defense."

Cole finished with 27 points, Layton had 11 and Mullen added nine rebounds.

The Tigers (7-13) play at Whittemore-Prescott on Monday to open district tournament play.

Fairview (6-14) was led by Carl Gossman with 18 points and Joe Koslakiewicz with 12. The Eagles play at Hale in Monday's district opener.
