PINCONNING - Mar. 12, 2010 - Pinconning made sure that Monday's upset victory over Bridgeport wasn't the highlight of the week -- merely the launching point -- as the Spartans toppled Carrollton in Friday's Class B District 58 title game, 41-34.
The last time the Spartans won a district basketball title -- 1986 -- Tim Floyd was in uniform and his seniors were still more than five years from being born.
Floyd claimed his first district trophy as coach as Pinny took a 13-8 lead after one quarter and maintained a slim margin throughout.
Casey Pashak scored more than half the Spartans' points with 22, including seven in the opening quarter as Pinny built its lead.
The game became interesting in the fourth quarter as the Spartans hit just 5-of-13 free throws, but a Pashak 3-pointer and a basket by Lucas Foco were key to denying Carrollton's comeback efforts.
Pinny (19-4) returns its David role on Monday as it takes on Goliath -- second-ranked Flint Powers -- in the second game of the North Branch regional.
Carrollton (17-5) was led by Jay-Jay Perry with 14 points. |
