The Tawas Area varsity softball team swept a double header from Oscoda on Thursday by the scores of 16-0 and 14-7.
Annie Righetti picked up the win in the five inning opener going the distance and allowing no runs on five hits. She struck out three and walked none. Andrea Rousseau went the first three innings and took the loss for the Owls. Andrea allowed nine runs on nine hits while striking two and walking seven. Ashley Scott pitched the final two innings and allowed five runs on three hits. Scott struck out one and walked none.
Tawas put together a two out rally in the first to take a 4-0 lead on a Katie McKenzie single, a double by Rachel Adaline, a walk, a double by Amber Yates and a single by Richelle Payea. The Braves added two more in the second on singles by McKenzie and Adaline and a bases loaded walk to Amber Yates.
The Tawas lead increased to 10-0 in the third on walks to Shelby Alda, Christie Cooper and Richelle Payea, singles by Ivy Schaaf and Jenny Ross and a triple by Rachel Adaline.
The Braves final five runs came in the fifth on a double by Adaline, an error, a hit batter, a single by Payea and an inside the park grand slam home run by Shelby Alda.
Leading hitters for Tawas were: Rachel Adaline with a single, two doubles, a triple and two RBI, Amber Yates with a double and three RBI, Alda with a home run and four RBI, Richelle Payea with two singles and one RBI, Jenny Ross with a single and one RBI, Katie McKenzie with two hits and Ivy Schaaf with a single and one RBI.
For the Owls, Nikki Shugart had a double and single while Jenny Nedo, Erin Sweet and Lela Cotton had one hit each.
In the nightcap, Shelby Alda started and went the first 3 1/3 innings for Tawas allowing six runs on six hits. She struck out three and walked six. Abby Gentges came on in the third with one out and runners on first and second. She struck out the side and finished the final 3 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Gentges allowed one unearned run on no hits. She struck out ten and walked two. Nikki Shugart took the loss for the Owls allowing fourteen runs on seventeen hits. She struck out four and walked four.
Tawas got one run in the first on an Ivy Schaaf walk, a ground out and a RBI single by Adaline. They added two in the second on singles by Amber Yates, Arianna Conklin and Gentges.
The Owls got a run in the third on a single by Megan Zarachowicz, two wild pitches and a RBI ground out by Abby Samotis.
But the Braves came back with two in the fourth on an Adaline walk, a single by Yates, a walk to Conklin and a two RBI single by Alda for a 5-1 lead. In the fourth, Tawas increased their lead to 10-1 as they plated five runs in the inning. Ivy Schaaf singled to open the inning, McKenzie walked. Both runners advanced on a double steal before Adaline, Yates and Conklin combined for back to back to back doubles. Alda singled in the final run of the inning.
The Owls came right back in their half of the inning with five runs of their own. Erin Sweet opened the inning with a single, Cotton walked, Alison Parker singled, Shugart walked, Zarachowicz singled, Jenny Nedo drew a walk and Abby Samotis delivered a RBI single. Gentges came on in relief of Alda and struck out the next two batters to close out the inning.
The Braves closed out their scoring with a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. The Owls tallied a final unearned run in the seventh for the final score of 14-7.
