The Tawas Area Lady Brave Softball Team went 2-1 on the day to claim third place honors in their own eleven team invitational tournament on Saturday. The Lady Braves defeated Arenac Eastern 9-1 and Birch Run 4-1 to win their three team pool. In the tournament championship round, Tawas dropped a 4-0 decision in the semi-final to eventual tournament champion Gladstone.
In their first pool play game of the day, Annie Righetti went the distance to post the 9-1 win over Arenac Eastern, striking out one and walking two.
Tawas plated three runs in the first, four in the third and two in the fourth to earn the win. Leading hitters for the Lady Braves were: Jenny Ross with two doubles and three RBI, Christie Cooper with a single and two RBI, Amber Yates and Katie McKenzie each with a single and one RBI, Rachel Adaline had a double and Ivy Schaaf had a single.
In their second pool play game, Abby Gentges picked up the 4-1 win over Birch Run allowing one unearned run on two hits. She struck out four and walked three.
The Lady Braves scored twice in the opening inning on a single and stolen base by Gentges, a walk, an error and a ground out. They added another run in the fourth on Jenny Ross’s first home run of the season for a 3-0 lead. Their final run came in the sixth on singles by Katie McKenzie, two wild pitches and a single by Amber Yates. Leading hitters in the game for Tawas were: Ross with a home run and one RBI, Yates with a single and one RBI, and Gentges, McKenzie and Richelle Payea with one hit each.
Following pool play action, the top team in each of the three pools advanced to a single elimination championship round. In the tournament semi-final game, Tawas dropped a 4-0 decision to Gladstone, the eventual tournament champion.
Abby Gentges took the loss allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits. She struck out four and walked three. Leading hitters for Tawas in that semi-final game were Jenny Ross and Christie Cooper with one hit each.
Pool Play action in Pool A saw Standish defeat St. Louis 10-3, New Boston Huron downed Gaylord 3-0, Gaylord beat St. Louis 5-2 and New Boston Huron dropped Standish 8-0 to win the pool. In Pool B it was Tawas over Arenac Eastern 9-1, Birch Run over Arenac Eastern 7-0, and Tawas winning the pool by defeating Birch Run 4-1. In Pool C it was Hemlock over Gladwin by the score of 6-3, Gladstone downed Michigan Lutheran Seminary 10-0, Gladwin defeated MLS 8-0 and it was Gladstone winning the pool by defeating Hemlock 2-1.
In the consolation round it was Birch Run over Standish 8-0, Hemlock over Gaylord by the score of 4-0. In the tournament championship game it was Gladstone defeating New Boston Huron by the score of 4-0. |
