GLADWIN - May 24, 2010 - Oscoda traveled to Gladwin Monday night and returned with a soccer victory, 3-2. The Lady Owls evened their record to 7-7-2 for the season with one match left against Pinconning on Wednesday.
Gladwin struck first in the 11th minute when Melanie Smalley netted a long shot over the outstretched arms of Oscoda goalkeeper, Kaylee Charters. Oscoda scored next in the 17th minute when Jessica McCracken struck Dani Griffin in stride and she found the net with her 22nd goal of the year. Oscoda found the game winner in the 66th minute when LaPointe passed the ball through the goal mouth and Asheley Suszek banged it home for the win.
Conditions were hot with a blazing sun but as Osocoda senior midfielder, Maggie Ungurean said, "it was probably too hot to play a game tonight but everyone worked extremely hard and I'm happy we won!"
Coach Gary Schneider summed up the match by stating, "I got to substitute the entire bench in and out during the first half to keep the team fresh," said Oscoda coach Gary Schneider. "We wore down a good Gladwin squad. It was a solid team effort in all aspects of the game. We pretty much controlled the match and played the way we wanted the game to go on a very hot day!"
Charters faced 21 shots by a freeshooting Gladwin team. She stopped 19 and played well under pressure from all over the field. Katy Peacock led the defense with 13 intercepts, three steals and four non-keeper saves. Chelsea Carraway had seven intercepts and six steals.
"Shannon Fowler, Melissa Yang, and Jerica Williams all had a big defensive match with a lot of solid touches on the ball", said assistant coach Tim Colborn. "They picked up the slack for starter Mary Ruby who missed the match due to a death in the family."
