ROSCOMMON - May 12, 2010 -The Oscoda Lady Owl soccer team raised its record on Wednesday night to 4-6, beating a Roscommon squad 7-2 that had blanked the Owls two weeks ago.
The Owls came out strong, firing at the Lady Bucks' net with a vengeance. Although Roscommon found the net first in the fifth minute, the rest of the match was all Oscoda as they defended their home turf.
Freshman Kaylee Charters put the Owls on the board at the 26 minute mark when Dani Griffin hit her in the corner with an outlet pass that Charters took to the net. Griffin put Oscoda on top 10 minutes later when she gobbled up a lose ball after Alex Barnes had shot at the keeper. That made the score 2-1 Oscoda at the half.
It took only nine minutes into the second half for Griffin to seal the match with a goal off a Marie Stork cross. Chelsea Carraway scored next, in the 53rd minute, when Jessica McCracken drove to the net and dropped a pass back to the wide open Carraway.
Griffin scored her third of the match and 16th of the season four minutes later. Stork earned an assist. Stork scored in the 69th minute with help from Mary Wood. Charters ended the Oscoda barrage in the 70th minute with her second goal of the game. Carraway earned the assist on a beautiful cross.
Oscoda outshot Roscommon, 33-9. Roscommon did manage a second goal with just 2 seconds left on the clock. Morgan Romancky scored both Lady Buck strikes. Roscommon dropped to 8-5 on the year.
"We hustled and worked as a team tonight", said junior defender Katy Peacock. "The defense worked as a well oiled machine."
Her thoughts were seconded by head coach Gary Schneider.
"That was the best all-around game we have played all season," he said. "We were strong on both ends of the field and the passing was outstanding. Teamwork was at its finest."
Peacock led the defense with 19 intercepts and four steals. Carraway earned seven steals and five intercepts, Melissa Yang had nine intercepts and five steals and Tori LaPointe notched seven steals.
Nicole Jackson earned the win in goal making seven saves.
Oscoda hosts its first annual invitational tournament Saturday, May 15. Matches begin at 10:00am. Birch Run, Grayling and Gladwin will be facing off with Oscoda during the day. |
