2007-8 Season: 4-17 (0-12, 7th place North East Michigan Conference)
Head Coach: Bob Leslie (3rd Season, also coached team previously)
Returning Players: Billy Raushi, sr. (G); Austin Swanson, sr. (G/F); Tristan Kohlhoff, sr. (F); Chris Downes, jr. (G).
New to varsity: Kyle Saunders, sr.; Mike Lovett, jr.; Casey Popielarz, jr.; Kevin Dupuis, jr.; Chris Powell, jr.; Tyler Hennagir, jr.; Kevin Peckham, jr.; Kyle Gamez, fr.
Outlook: The Cardinals suffered through a winless NEMC campaign in 2007-8, and the league didn't get any more inviting with the departure of Oscoda. But W-P hopes to step up its level of competitiveness even as it brings back just four of last year's varsity players.
The good news for the Cards is that both of their top leading scorers – seniors Austin Swanson (10.4 points per game) and Billy Raushi (10.3 ppg). Senior forward Tristan Kohlhoff (6.1 ppg and one of the team's top two rebounders) and junior guard Chris Downes (5.1 ppg) also return.
They also welcome junior transfer Mike Lovett from New Jersey and seven others, including freshman Kyle Gamez.
W-P brings one of the quicker, more athletic teams in the area onto the court, but whether or not they are physical enough to compete for an NEMC title remains to be seen. Fortunately for the Cards, once they are done with league play, their Class C district includes the likes of Oscoda, Hale and Alcona rather than Tawas, Ogemaw Heights and Standish-Sterling.
Even better, the district tournament will be played at Oscoda rather than Harbor Springs, last year's site. |
