Outlook: Whittemore-Prescott's boys may not quite have the numbers to compete for an NEMC league title, but they've certainly proven they're a force to contend with in individual events and in the Division 4 regionals.
Despite W-P's shrinking enrollment, Jeff Erickson's roster has expanded over the past few years.
"We've been fortunate ... to have had some success," he says. "My goal is to build a program and I think the athletes are buying in.
"Last year we were one bad hand-off from a chance at (the MITCA team state finals). I would love to have that opportunity again and this year actually make it."
Despite significant graduation losses, the Cards return a number of solid athletes, including a pair of state qualifiers.
Billy Raushi competed in the state finals in three events -- the high jump, long jump and 110 hurdles. Raushi already broke the school high jump record his season in an late-March meet.
Matt Ackerman was a state qualifier in the 100-meter dash and this winter didn't play basketball so as to concentrate more on preparing for track season.
Distance runner Scott Garnett and middle-distance runner Lukas Earl will also look to make an impact during their senior seasons.
David LaPoint is the only other returning senior. Returning juniors include Casey Popielarz, Chris Downes and Patrick Karash.
"We have a few good (athletes) back," Erickson says. "I am also excited about the group of talented young guys this year. It's up to my seniors to lead them.
"Thus far I have been very pleased with my team's work ethic. If everyone stays healthy and some of the young guys step up we should be OK."
