MANCELONA -
June 6, 2009 - Oscoda didn't have history on its side Saturday in its first regional softball tournament appearance in more than a decade. But that didn't keep the Owls from giving Gladstone all it could handle in their Division 3 regional semifinal game, falling 1-0 to the heavily favored Braves.
Gladstone, which went on to defeat Kalkaska for its seventh straight regional title, scratched out an unearned run in the first inning and made it stand the rest of the way.
Leadoff batter Abby Riggio led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single, stole second and then scored while stealing third base when Oscoda's throw went into left field.
Oscoda pitcher Niki Shugart allowed just one hit the rest of the way.
Unfortunately for the Owls, Gladstone pitchers Mackenzie Sheppek and Hilary Austin also combined to throw a two-hitter.
"You want to talk about a great program, holy cow," said Oscoda coach Mike Williams. "We played them pretty tough, though. I would have to think they were a bit surprised.
"I know I was."
Anna Kushmaul and Jenny Nedo had Oscoda's only hits of the game.
"It's amazing to think we hung that close," Williams said. "Gladstone is one amazing team."
Gladstone (34-6) plays Tuesday in a state quarterfinal contest against Leroy Pine River.
Oscoda finishes at 26-12.
Shugart and Ashley Wimmer were named to the all-region team.
