ROSCOMMON - May 15, 2009 -
The Oscoda Lady Owls Soccer team visited Roscommon on Friday night and returned with a win against the Lady Bucks, 2-1.
Oscoda took control early when leading goal scorer Dani Griffin scored her 17th of the season at the 17 minute mark. Three minutes later she netted her 18th of the year to give Oscoda a 2-0 lead that they held throughout the match. Roscommon drew closer in the 53rd minute when a low corner kick eluded a tangle of legs and bodies and trickled into the far netting. Rushelle Sidebottom and Denelle Wilson picked up assists on Griffin's two goals.
Nicole Jackson earned the win in goal. She faced 15 shots in the match, giving up just the one goal.
Roscommon came hard in the second half with a wind at their backs. The Lady Bucks had taken only 4 shots in the first half. Katia Kotula again led the Oscoda defense with 29 intercepts and 6 steals. Katy Peacock had another outstanding performance with 15 intercepts and 5 steals. Melissa Yang had 8 intercepts. Oscoda played without their strong senior defender, Krystin Inman, who was injured Wednesday night in Pinconning.
"We played good tonight," said sophomore forward Chelsea Carraway. " We played with aggression and did a good job controling the ball. Communication was a key factor."
"We finally played a 'complete' game," said Oscoda coach Gary Schneider. " Our passing was fabulous. We need to cash in on our easy chances if we plan on going farther come districts but a great effort by all."
The 7-8 Owls will finish the regular season at home. They will welcome Saginaw Arthur Hill on Monday and the Gladwin Flying G's on Wednesday. Both matches are scheduled for 5:00pm with Monday being Senior Night. Oscoda will open District play on Tuesday, May 26th against Grayling.
