PINCONNING - May 13, 2009 -
The Oscoda girls soccer team improved their record to 6-8 on Wednesday night in Pinconning, defeating the Spartans, 4-2.
Oscoda took the lead in the first half when Denelle Wilson found a streaking Dani Griffin with an outlet pass that Griffin drove to the net. That was the only goal in the first 40 minutes.
Ten minutes into the second half Wilson hit Rushelle Sidebottom with a pass and she buried it into the net. Wilson connected with Griffin for the second time and that resulted in giving the Owls a 3-0 lead just four minutes later.
Pinconning put a scare into the Lady Owls when Michelle Johnson and Chelsea Curry scored goals at the 66th and 72nd minute marks.
Wilson iced the game in the 78th minute when she stole the ball from a Spartan defender and blasted a goal, her team leading 16th of the season.
"It was a great team effort and some real good passing was displayed by everyone tonight", stated Coach Gary Schneider. "Katy (Peacock) and Dani had standout games."
The match was played under a constant windy drizzle.
"We slipped and slided to victory on a wet, slick field," was how sophomore Defender Melissa Yang saw it.
The defense was led by Katia Kotula who made 6 steals and 17 intercepts. She was joined by Peacock with 5 steals and 8 intercepts and Yang with 3 and 5. The defense held the Spartans to just 4 shots on goal.
The Oscoda squad travels to Roscommon on Friday and then finishes the regular season on Monday and Wednesday at home. Saginaw Arthur Hill and Gladwin will be visiting. Both matches will be at 5:00pm with the Monday match designated as Senior Night with a special presentation at halftime.
