at Gladwin 4, Oscoda 2

GLADWIN - May 1, 2009 - The Oscoda Lady Owls soccer team fell below the .500 mark for the first time this season Friday night.  The Owls fell to the undefeated Gladwin Flying G's, 4-2. 

"We continue to show improvement," said Oscoda coach Gary Schneider. "I saw a lot of good teamwork tonight.  We just didn't get any breaks when we needed them."

Oscoda held a led early on when Dani Griffin scored twice within a four minute span to give the Owls the lead.  Gladwin opened the scoring in the 11th minute.  Gladwin tied the score in the 34th minute to tie the match at the half, 2-2. 

The G's went ahead for good just 4 minutes into the second half and added an insurance goal in the 69th minute.  Melanie Smalley scored twice for the G's.  Lone shot were netted by Ashley Ford and Marina Coats. 

Rushelle Sidebottom picked up an assist on Griffin's second goal.  Her first was when she converted a Penalty Kick.

Oscoda outshot Gladwin 14-11 but were unable to connect in the second half. 

"We gave it all we could," said Oscoda's Kelli Lehman. "We played our hardest." 

Defensive standouts for the Owls were Katy Peacock with 9 intercepts and 2 steals.  Katia Kotula had 7 intercepts, 9 steals and 1 non-keeper save.  Denelle Wilson finished with 5 steals and 8 intercepts.

The Owls drop to 4-5 and the G's remain undefeated at 10-0. 

Oscoda hosts Standish-Sterling at 5:00pm on Monday.
