STANDISH-STERLING - Apr. 15, 2009 - Standish-Sterling outshot Oscoda 20-11 in Wednesday's non-conference girls soccer match, but the Owls proved to be better finishers as the Chelsea Carraway's goal in the 63rd minute lifted Oscoda to a 2-1 victory over the Panthers.
Oscoda took the lead in the first half on a Dani Griffin goal, with Sidebottom picking up the assists.
Karina Pierce answered with the tying goal in the 25th minute, knocking in Megan Jurek's corner kick.
"It was winning ugly, but I'll take the win," said Oscoda coach Gary Schneider. "The Panthers kept up the pressure, but (goalkeeper) Nicole Jackson came up big time and again."
Jackson finished with 19 saves for the Owls (3-1). Katia Kotula, Krystin Inman and Denelle Wilson led the Owls' defense.
"I thought we controlled play pretty well, especially in the second half," said SSC coach John Rudberg. "They capitalized on a couple of defensive breakdowns."
Kelsey Prohaska had 11 saves for the Panthers (0-3-1).
"She is improving with every game," Rudberg said. "Brittany Ostroski and Paige Raes also played very good games. We need to find some players who can put the ball in the back of the net."
The Panthers also had a bad break when Jurek hammered a shot toward the goal, but instead of finding the net drilled one of her teammates, and Oscoda was able to clear the ball out.
"In all of my years of coaching, I've never seen that one," Rudberg said.
SSC plays Ogemaw Heights for the second time this week on Friday.
