OGEMAW HEIGHTS - May 23, 2009 - Ogemaw Heights' baseball team bounced back from a 2-0 defeat to Mt. Morris on Saturday to defeat Petoskey 15-5 and take third place in the Falcons' home invitational.
The Falcons knocked Petoskey around for 13 hits, including six doubles and an Alex Jennings home run. Jennings finished with three hits and three RBIs, while Jake Wangler had three hits - including two doubles -- and drove in five runs.
Earl Bennett and Nick Thorson each had a double and single, with Bennett picking up three RBIs.
"Jennings and Wangler really drove the ball," said Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace. "Earl also did a nice job behind the plate, and Chris Hebert came in and picked up Eric Noble with two solid innings on the mound."
Noble pitched the first four innings and earned the win, allowing five runs on four hits, with Hebert pitching two innings of one-hit shutout ball to close the game out.
The Falcons didn't roll over for third-ranked Mt. Morris in the opener, but managed just three singles and a Nathan Noffsinger double while being shut out.
"They're a very good team," Peace said, noting Mt. Morris beat Bay City Central 6-4 in the tournament championship game. "We only had four hits but we had a few balls that they made plays on to rob us of hits.
"It was a very well-played game. Coach Almasy's teams are always well-coached and execute well."
Blaine Powley gave up two runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out 10 in the loss.
The Falcons (18-16) play at Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday if the Oilers win their Tuesday pre-district contest, then take on Standish-Sterling on Saturday at Pinconning to open district tournament play.
