OGEMAW HEIGHTS - May 21, 2009 - Ogemaw Heights' baseball team got strong pitching from Glenn Watchorn and Alex Jennings and some timely hitting as the Falcons swept Alpena on Thursday, 5-1 and 15-5.
Jennings tossed a three-hitter, walking two and striking out nine.
"Jennings threw very well," said Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace. "We had some clutch hits and executed everything very, very well. We also played our best defense of the year."
Jennings and Daichi Itabashi each had two hits, while Jake Wangler's two run single highlighted a three-run third inning that gave Ogemaw the lead for good.
Watchorn also struck out nine in his own complete-game win, allowing nine hits. The Falcons trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the fourth, but put 10 runs on the board to take command. Watchorn helped his own cause with two hits and three RBIs in the inning and finished with three hits for the game.
Chris Bones added two hits and Nick Thorson had two, including a two-run home run in the sixth that gave the Falcons a 10-run lead and ended the contest via the mercy rule.
"It was awesome to have Nick connect on one," Peace said. "He's been one of our best workers and even when he's struggled, he's been an outstanding leader for our guys."
The Falcons (17-15) host their home tournament on Saturday.
