CADILLAC - May 16, 2009 - Ogemaw Heights earned two wins in three games at Saturday's Cadillac baseball tournament, beating Cadillac 7-4 and Holly 9-1 before falling 13-7 to Unionville Sebewaing.
"We felt pretty positive about the day overall," said Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace. "We saw some kids have some lightbulbs go on, so hopefully that carries over and we can get things going."
The Falcons got off to a slow start against Cadillac, trailing 3-0 after the first inning and 4-2 in the fifth.
Jarritt Orlando's home run ignited the Falcons, and Kyle Wangler's three-run double drove in what proved to be the winning runs.
"We seemed done," Peace said. "Kids were striking out or getting weak swings. Orlando homered and that got the kids going."
Earl Bennett pitched a complete-game win, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out eight.
Alex Jennings pitched a one-hitter against Holly, allowing one unearned run and striking out three.
"Jennings pitched very well," Peace said. "Not too many comfortable swings from the Holly team. He looked as good as we thought he could look."
Jennings and Chris Bones each had two hits, while Glenn Watchorn had a double and three RBIs.
USA led by as much as 7-1 midway through the final game, but the Falcons kept coming back, cutting into the lead with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth that made it 8-6. USA's five-run sixth put the game out of reach.
"USA is a good team," Peace said. "Our pitching struggled a bit but we kept coming back every time."
Jennings had two hits, Nathan Noffsinger had two hits and two RBIs; and Andrew Funsch had a hit and three RBIs to lead Ogemaw.
Glenn Watchorn was the first of four pitchers and took the loss.
Ogemaw (12-14) hosts Tawas Area in a rain make-up on Monday and travels to Beaverton on Tuesday.
