JOHN GLENN - May 12, 2009 - John Glenn's pitching and defense got the best of Ogemaw Heights on Tuesday as the Bobcats twice shut out the Falcons 5--0 and 4-0.
The victories put Glenn all alone in second place in the NEMC, two games behind Pinconning, which clinched the league title with a sweep of Whittemore-Prescott.
Nate Harrington held the Falcons to three hits in the opener, while Jordan Schumann threw a one-hitter in the second game.
"Two really well-pitched games for Glenn," said Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace. "Harrington and Schumann are a really nice 1-2.
"We put the ball in play quite a bit in Game 1, but they made the plays. Schumann (who played center field in the opener) made two or three catches in center on balls that off the bat looked like they might drop.
"We had guys in scoring position but couldn't get the big hit."
Nathan Noffsinger, Blaine Powley and Glenn Watchorn had the Falcons' hits in the first game, while Chris Bones had Ogemaw's one hit in the nightcap.
Powley took the loss in the first game, allowing six hits and five walks while striking out three.
Eric Noble allowed four hits and two walks, also with three strikeouts.
"Blaine and Eric both pitched well," Peace said. "Blaine left a couple of balls up and Eric had a rough first inning but they both threw good games. But when you don't score runs you can't win."
Peace added that Jarritt Orlando and Andrew Funsch turned in a couple of outstanding plays in the outfield, while the infield defense was solid as well.
Schumann had 16 strikeouts in winning the second game for the Bobcats (6-2 NEMC). The Falcons fell to 4-4 in league play.
