PETOSKEY - May 7, 2009 - Ogemaw Heights' baseball team traveled to Petoskey on Thursday, earning a split with the Northmen. The Falcons held on for a 13-7 victory in the opener but lost the second game 11-1.
"We really swung the bats well in Game 1," said Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace. "Kids hitting the ball the other way, taking the walk when it was there, moving runners ...
"Glenn (Watchorn) attacked the strike zone and our D made all the plays."
Watchorn allowed two earned runs on five hits, walking one and striking out four in five innings. Earl Bennett pitched the final two innings.
Blaine Powley had four hits (including a double) and three RBIs and courtesy runner Charlie Murdock scored all four times he ran for Powley. Jake Wangler added three hits and three RBIs, Alex Jennings had two hits and Jarritt Orlando added a double.
In the second game, Peace said a lack of patience at the plate cost the Falcons offensively, while the defense wasn't as strong as in the opening game.
Kyle Scott took the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs -- six of them thanks to errors -- on five hits in 3-1/3 innings.
Andrew Funsch had two hits, while Daichi Itabashi drove in Wangler with the Falcons' only run.
"We're getting there, but we still have to find it," Peace said. "Things aren't going to get any easier with so many games coming up, so the kids will have to find a way to focus and get through it."
