OGEMAW HEIGHTS - May 5, 2009 -
Ogemaw Heights' baseball team seemed to have things well in hand with Whittemore-Prescott on Tuesday, but had to put down a big Cardinal uprising late in the first game before coming away with a 20-10 victory. The Falcons went on to earn a sweep with a 17-2 win the nightcap.
The Falcons led by as much as 11-3 in the opener, but W-P scored six runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Ogemaw lead to 11-10.
A nine-run sixth inning for the Falcons ended it.
"The good new was we broke our losing streak," said Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace. "The first game you could really see W-P playing with confidence and gaining more and more as they went along. When we provided an opportunity to let them back in, they jumped all over it.
"Our guys came back and answered the bell and I hope we learned an important lesson from it."
Blaine Powley picked up the win for the Falcons, pitching the first five innings and allowing one earned run on eight hits while striking out seven. Powley added four hits, including a double; Alex Jennings had two hits and three RBIs; Jarritt Orlando had two hits and two RBIs; and Andrew Funsch stole four bases and scored three runs.
Cody Jellison and Sean Leathorn led W-P with three hits apiece, with Kevin Dupuis adding two.
W-P led briefly in the second game, taking a 2-0 first inning lead as Dylan DeBoever led off and later scored on Dupuis' RBI triple.
Ogemaw quickly bounced back with three runs in the first, Eric Noble shut down the Cards thereafter and the Falcons added 14 runs in the next two innings.
"I thought both teams picked up right where they left off (in Game 1), and for us that was fortunate," Peace said. "We came out patient at the right times and aggressive at the right times, and took advantage of having runners in scoring position."
Noble finished with a three-inning three-hitter, didn't walk a batter and struck out two.
Jason Middleton and Orlando each had two hits, Funsch had a hit, scored three runs and had four RBIs; and Glenn Watchorn had a hit and three RBIs.
The Falcons (6-7, 4-2 NEMC) travel to Petoskey on Thursday, while W-P (3-17, 0-6) hosts its home tournament on Saturday.
