OGEMAW HEIGHTS -
May 2, 2009 - Ogemaw Heights shook off the rust from nine days without a game, falling 5-1 to Bay City Western and 10-5 to Sterling Heights Parkway Christian on Saturday.
Blaine Powley took his first loss of the season to Western, allowing three runs -- one earned -- on three hits in three innings. Eric Noble pitched the final three innings, allowing one earned run on two hits.
"We competed pretty well with Western," said Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace. "They were one of the most solid teams we've seen this year. Noble and Powley both pitched pretty well.
"We had a few round bounces that cost us runs and didn't get any fortuitous hops to go our way when we needed them."
Powley had three hits and drove in Andrew Funsch with the Falcons' only run in the fifth inning.
In the second game, Parkway Christian jumped on the Falcons for five runs in the first and built a 9-0 lead before Ogemaw came back with five runs in the final two innings.
"They came out patient and took some walks," Peace said. "Our pitchers (also) got themselves into some jams. They came up with clutch hits with guys in scoring position and we didn't until the last two innings."
Alex Jennings started and took the loss. Glenn Watchorn was the most effective of four Falcon pitchers in the game, allowing two hits and one earned run in 3-2/3 innings of relief, walking two and striking out two.
Chris Bones, Jarritt Orlando, Daichi Itabashi, Jake Wangler and Jarritt Orlando each had hits.
"We were glad to see some fight out of our guys in those last two innings," Peace said. "Hopefully we get some of these games in the next few weeks and try to get into a rhythm and see what kind of team we end up as."
