OGEMAW HEIGHTS - Apr. 17, 2009 - Ogemaw Heights' baseball squad got a pair of solid pitching performances again Thursday as the Falcons swept 10-2 and 15-5 to stay unbeaten on the young season.
Alex Jennings and Jason Middleton combined for a three-hitter in the opener. Jennings allowed a hit, a walk and struck out six, while Middleton gave up two hits, one walk and struck out one.
"Alex and Jason cruised without really getting into any jams," said Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace. "They were able to stay ahead in the count and pitch to their strengths."
Jake Wangler, Nathan Noffsinger, Chris Bones and Blaine Powley had consecutive hits in a five-run second inning that gave Ogemaw a 7-0 lead.
Powley finished with two hits and three RBIs, Wangler had a hit and drove in two runs, Bones scored three times with an RBI and Noffsinger scored twice and drove in a run.
"We hit the ball much better," Peace said. "Better swings and a better mental approach.
"All three freshmen (Dalton Worthy, Michael Horn and Sheldon Roberto) got in and helped out."
Glenn Watchorn pitched a five-inning complete game in the nightcap, allowing five hits and two earned runs and walking two while striking out four.
"The defense put Glenn in a jam in the third inning," Peace said. "But he fought his way out of it and gave us a chance to stay in the game and eventually pull away."
Valley Lutheran scored four times in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead.
Daichi Itabachi was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth, and Chris Bones and Earl Bennett walked to load the bases. Jarritt Orlando and Nick Thorson followed with RBIs as the Falcons regained the lead and never looked back.
Jake Wangler had two hits and two RBIs, Thorson had a double and three RBIS and Itabachi scored three times to lead the Falcon offense.
"There is still so much for us to work on," Peace said. "We really need to clean it up defensively. We were fortunate to have our pitchers get us out of the messes we made for ourselves, but it won't always work out that way.
"But it was better than Tuesday and we can only ask for the kids to keep getting better."
