Outlook: Oscoda made a 12-win improvement over its previous season in 2008. With an experienced squad -- and an independent schedule that no longer includes former NEMC foes John Glenn, Pinconning and Ogemaw Heights -- the Owls hope to make another leap forward and make a run at a potential district title.
"We have a veteran squad," says Oscoda coach Bob Skodack. "I believe that if they can stay focused we should be competitive this year."
The Owls boast 12 seniors on their 14-man roster, 10 of which played for the club last year.
They should have more pitching depth than in recent seasons. Parker Thompson had a 4-4 record last year as well as two saves, while Chuck Dumaresq was 3-2. Tyler Little also saw plenty of action on the mound.
Nick Smith (.406 batting average, three home runs) returns at third base, while Thompson (shortstop when not pitching) hit .369 and scored 36 runs. First baseman Brett Leech (.346) and center fielder Mike Wimmer (.324, 31 runs scored) were also among the Owls' leading hittters.
Also back are outfielder / catcher Bryce Haglund, catcher Brad Niemann, outfielder / first baseman Alex Schram and infielder / outfielder Thomas York.
A total of nine Owls will likely be used to pitch at one time or another.
Without a league title to play for, the focus for Oscoda will be on preparing for the post-season. In a district that includes Whittemore-Prescott, Hale, Roscommon, Alcona and Houghton Lake, that focus should have the Owls contending for a district crown at season's end.
