TAWAS AREA - Sep. 2, 2009 - After two close games to open Wednesday's NEMC volleyball match with Whittemore-Prescott, Tawas Area didn't waste any time in putting the final touches on their first league victory of the season.
The Braves finished the third set with a 14-1 run to complete a 25-20, 25-21, 25-6 sweep of the Cardinals.
"That what we're supposed to be playing like," said Tawas coach Carol Elowsky. "We didn't do that in our earlier tournaments, which is why we lost most of those matches. Tonight we played much more like we can."
The Braves' hitting triumvirate of Molly Stoll, Katie Challenger and Dana Kolnitys did most of the damage, particularly during a 9-4 stretch in the second game that helped Tawas pull away from a 14-14 tie and during the Braves' impressive run through the third set.
"The third game was one of total flatness at a time when Tawas came on strong," said W-P coach Helen Loomis. "We did not do too bad our first two games but still not to our potential. Serving and hitting errors from a few key players blocked our game flow."
The Cards also had a rough time handling the serving of the Braves' Hannah Colombo, who served out 12 straight points in the third game.
Tawas improved to 2-0 in NEMC play with the win, while W-P fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in league play.
