OGEMAW HEIGHTS - Oct. 28, 2009 - Ogemaw Heights' volleyball team wrapped up third place in the North East Michigan Conference on Wedneday with a victory over Whittemore-Prescott, but it was anything but easy for the Falcons.
W-P appeared was on the verge of winning the match in the fourth game and a 2-1 lead in the match. But Ogemaw surged to the Game 4 win and claimed the fifth game for a 27-25, 11-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-7 victory.
Andrea Gillette took service with her team trailing 21-15 in the fourth game but served nine straight points to put the Falcons up 24-21, including five aces in the run.
"The girls did a good job coming from behind," said Ogemaw coach Diane Gillette. "It was a total team effort and the girls really focused and stayed calm ...
"In the fifth game we came out strong and kept attacking the net. I am proud of these girls for not giving up and playing until the end."
" I really felt we had this match," said W-P coach Helen Loomis. "The girls lost their momentum midway into Game 4 and couldn't get it back."
Shelby Marshall had 17 assists, Lexie O'Neil had 31 digs and Angela Carollo had 15 kills to lead the Falcons (14-15-7, 7-3 NEMC), while Ali Bronson had 13 kills, Jordan Maxwell had 42 assists and 30 digs and Staci Ostrander had four blocks for W-P (16-11-1, 3-7).
"I'm very proud of their overall play despite the loss," Loomis said. "They played excellent on defense and had a lot of well-deserved kills."
