ROGERS CITY - Nov. 6, 2009 - Whittemore-Prescott started strong in its bid for a second straight district volleyball championship, but couldn't sustain its momentum in Friday's title contest.
The Hurons finished strong to defeat W-P 25-23, 21-25, 25-18, 25-8 to end the Cardinals' season.
"I was very pleased with our play in Games 1 and 2," said W-P coach Helen Loomis. "Defensively we played awesome and our offense was consistent."
The tide turned in the final two games as Rogers City's outside hitter and top server caught fire and the Cardinals were unable to answer.
Leading W-P were Jordan Maxwell with 14 assists, Leighanna Loomis and Kayla Camp with 14 digs apiece and Chelsea Jasman with eight kills.
Loomis said she was proud of the Cards' 17-12-1 season in which they finished fourth in the NEMC.
"This is a very hard-working and talented group of girls," she said. "(They) were fun to coach."
