Ogemaw Heights 46, at Hemlock 6

HEMLOCK - Aug. 28, 2009 - Ogemaw Heights proved too much for Hemlock to handle in Friday's opener, throttling the Huskies 46-6 in a first-game performance that couldn't have gone much better for the Falcons.

Ogemaw scored 40 points in the middle two quarters, displayed plenty of balance on offense and shut out Hemlock on defense. The only score came inside the final minute on a fumble return for a score allowed by the offensive reserves.

"For an opener we executed well in all facets of the game," said Falcon coach Andrew Pratley. "Our defense played great, our offense putting up 46 points was a pleasant surprise and our special teams came up big all night."

Quarterback John Hughes was directly involved in each of the Falcons' first five touchdowns. Hughes scored on runs of 31, 21 and two yards, hooked up with Kyle Bellor on a 75-yard pass play and connected with Jarritt Orlando on a 28-yard scoring pass.

"It helps to have a quarterback experienced at the varsity level," Pratley said. "We expect a lot out of our quarterbacks. John did a great job, had a great game for us."

Greg Awrey added a 27-yard scoring run late in the third quarter and Sheldon Roberto scored from two yards out midway through the fourth.

Hughes finished with 110 rushing yards on nine carries and was 7-of-9 passing for 225 yards. Awrey added 48 yards on five carries. Bellor finished with three catches for 115 yards and Jason Immel had two grabs for 70 yards. Orlando was 4-of-6 on extra point kicks.

Tyler Brindley was in on 12 total tackles to lead 25 Falcons who made defensive plays in the game. Lance Griffus added eight tackles, Curtis Cameron had seven and Charlie Murdock and Anthony Zettel each had six.

The Falcons (1-0) face a stern test with highly-regarded Petoskey (1-0), which had a similarly easy time with Marquette (48-0) in its opener. The Northmen beat the Falcons twice last year -- 21-20 in the regular season and 21-13 in a first-round playoff game.

The two teams have played at least once every season since 2001, with the Falcons holding a 6-3 edge in the series. Petoskey returns many of its key players from last year's 9-2 squad.

"There's not any secrets between us," Pratley said. "It'll be a good challenge. We'll have to play mistake-free football if we want to beat them.

"We'll find out a lot more about our team on Friday, that's for sure."
