STANDISH-STERLING - Oct. 9, 2009 - Both Standish-Sterling and John Glenn needed wins Friday to enhance their chances at an MHSAA playoff berth.

After a first half of can-you-top-this offensive football, the defenses settled in for the second-half grind. John Glenn ultimately won that battle to claim a 41-20 victory over the Panthers.

The loss not only spoiled the Panthers' homecoming night, it gave SSC its fourth loss of the season, meaning they have to win their final two games and hope to accumulate enough playoff points along the way to sneak in as one of the few 5-4 teams to make the field.

John Glenn, of course, has been in that position for two weeks already, and pulled out its second straight victory to keep the Bobcats' hopes alive.

"Every one of our games has been a war," said SSC coach Paul Walderzak. "Our guys have made a great physical effort all season.

"We just have to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get ready for another one this week. Our job ... hasn't changed: be aggressive, play better than the week before and battle to the very end."

After taking a 27-20 halftime lead, the Bobcats managed just two touchdowns in the second half -- a 31-yard Ryan LaFlure run, and a 27-yarder by Devin McCulloh.

But on the defensive side, Glenn shut the Panthers out after Trevor Trombley ran wild in the first half.

"We stayed with them in the first half and actually played better defensively in the second (half)," Walderzak said. "We just could not get the scores in the second."

Trombley ran for 204 yards on 11 carries, including touchdown runs of 55 and 44 yards in the second quarter as the Panthers fought back from a 20-7 deficit. He also had a 80-yard kickoff return in the first quarter.

"Trevor Trombley ran the ball as well or better than anyone I've seen all year," Walderzak said. "He put on a great show and got a lot of good blocks along the way."

Jordan Schumann hit Travis Bryant with a 23-yard touchdown pass and Brandon Flues booted the PAT to give Glenn an early 7-0 lead, but that advantage lasted only as long as it took Trombley to race 80 yards with the ensuing kickoff.

LaFlure and Michael Dombrowski each added short touchdown runs in the second quarter to make it 20-7. Schumann had a 9-yard scoring run between Trombley's two long scores in the final six minutes of the half.

LaFlure led Glenn (3-4, 2-2 NEMC) with 149 yards on 17 carries, with Dombrowski adding 101 yards on 11 carries.

Alex Schmidt had eight solo tackles, eight assists and a sack to lead SSC's defense. Zack Neid added seven tackles and six assists and Channing Spencer had six tackles and a 42-yard fumble return.

The Panthers (3-4, 1-3) host Suttons Bay (6-1) on Friday, Oct. 9, while Glenn takes on Saginaw Nouvel Catholic (4-3).
