JOHN GLENN - Oct. 2, 2009 - Tawas Area stuck with John Glenn for a half.

But the Braves are painfully thin, and the Bobcats a far better team than their 1-4 record entering the game.

The Bobcats, leading 14-6 at the half, exploded for a 17-point third quarter and went on to top Tawas 38-6.

"We played them tough for two quarters," said Tawas coach Tim Webb. "At halftime we felt like it was a winnable game, but we made too many mistakes on offense and our guys eventually wore down.

"We had 10 guys who literally never left the field."

The Braves' limited numbers and Glenn's physical, run-heavy offense. Jordan Schumann rushed for 169 yards on 14 carries and Ryan LaFlure added 103 yards on 12 carries as the Bobcats amassed 427 yards on the ground.

Schumann opened the scoring with a 64-yard run in the first quarter and added a 6-yard run in the second.

Tim Schmidt's 8-yard run in the second quarter got the Braves back in the game.

But in the third quarter, Brandon Flues kicked a 21-yard field, goal, LaFlure added a 21-yard touchdown run and Schumann scored his third touchdown from 48-yards out.

Kooper Martinez added an 8-yard run in the fourth quarter.

"Our guys continue to play with intensity and emotion," Webb said. "We had an impressive goal line stand in the fourth quarter."

Glenn improved to 2-4, (1-2 NEMC) and needs to keep on winning to keep alive its hopes of qualifying as a five-win team for the MHSAA playoffs. Glenn coach Mark Miller, though, wasn't looking that far ahead.

"One game at a time," he said. "Our focus this week is SSC."

Glenn wraps up its NEMC schedule at Standish-Sterling (3-3, 1-2), another team that is fighting to keep its playoff hopes alive.

Tawas (2-4, 0-4) is done with league play and faces arch-rival Oscoda this week.

"Oscoda is much-improved," Webb said. "They have good speed and they execute the option pretty well."
