ST. IGNACE - Sep. 18, 2009 - It may not have been AuGres-Sims' most artistic performance, but it got the job done.

The Wolverines overcame three turnovers Friday to win a non-conference battle with Rapid River, a game played in St. Ignace that replaced the usual North Star League contest with Posen.

The Vikings cancelled their 11-man football season in August, opting to plan a schedule against 8-man teams. Officially, the Vikings forfeited their 11-man games, though many of their opponents, including the Wolverines, decided to fill the open date on their schedules.

AGS and Rapid River, from the western Upper Peninsula, met halfway for a contest that the Wolverines led throughout, though never safely.

Connor Pendred rushed for 222 yards on 19 carries including  touchdown runs of 36 and 66 yards in the third quarter.

Travis Byard scored on a 7-yard run in the first quarter to give the Wolverines an early 6-0 lead that they held until halftime.

Rapid River scored on a pair of long plays in the third quarter to keep it close, trailing AGS 20-12 heading into the fourth.

Byard's second touchdown -- a 5-yard run -- and Tomas Smith's 2-point conversion opened up a 16-point lead that the Wolverines held.

Byard was 6-of-14 passing for 93 yards and three interceptions and rushed for 37 yards. Kyle Shanks added 62 yards rushing on 10 carries, while Derrick Stanley caught two passes for 50 yards and Pendred made two grabs for 33 yards.

Dakota Thomas paced the defense with 13 tackles, with Shanks adding 12 and Colton Liddell 11.

The Wolverines (2-2) return to North Star League action Friday, Sep. 25, at Atlanta.
