AuGRES-SIMS - Sep. 11, 2009 - AuGres-Sims committed two penalties on the opening kickoff, including one that erased a Wolverine fumble recovery deep in Hillman territory.
That, unfortunately, was a portent of things to come for the Wolverines, who were flagged 12 times for 125 yards and turned the ball over four times in a 39-0 loss to the Tigers.
Throw in three interceptions and two lost fumbles, and the result was about what one would expect.
Hillman's Jacob Burger picked off a pass and returned it 40 yards for the opening touchdown midway through the first quarter, and it was all downhill from there for the Wolverines.
Devon Shumaker ended Hillman's next drive with a 3-yard touchdown run for a 14-0 lead after one quarter. The Tigers added a 2-yard Lance Safford run and an 8-yard pass from Andrew Smith to Kevin Tracey to make it 26-0 at the half.
Smith and Tracey hooked up again for a 41-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-11 early in the third quarter and Shumaker capped the scoring with a 53-yard scoring run.
When the Wolverines weren't hurting themselves with penalties, the Tigers didn't let them get much going offensively. Travis Byard, coming off a big week at Alcona, completed 8-of-15 passes, but for only 51 yards as the Tigers (1-2, 1-0 North Star League) focused on shutting down wide receiver Colton Liddell. Byard also had 51 yards rushing on 13 carries.
Connor Pendred added 20 rushing yards on five carries and caught four passes for 14 yards.
Liddell and Kyle Shanks each had 10 tackles for the AGS (1-2, 0-1 NSL) defense.
