PETOSKEY - Oct. 30, 2009 - One could argue that Ogemaw Heights' 8-0 shutout of Petoskey in Friday's Division 3 playoff opener was the product of a muddy field and a torrential second-half downpour.

But it's not like the Fall of 2009 will be remembered for its tanning weather.

The Falcon defense turned in a dominant performance to hand the Northmen their first shutout since the 2007 season, when Ogemaw blanked a 3-6 Petoskey squad.

This year's Northmen were 8-1 with an offense that averaged nearly 37 points in the regular season despite at least half the season being played in weather as lousy as Friday's.

Not so this week. Petoskey managed 124 yards of total offense and crossed midfield just once. And that foray into Ogemaw territory started on the Petoskey 48-yard line and advanced eight yards before moving backward.

"All year our defense has played fantastic," said Ogemaw Heights coach Andrew Pratley. "They've just been getting better and better.

"You play a team four times in 14 months and there's no secrets. The kids executed our game plan extremely well."

The Falcons had just enough success moving the ball to win the field position battle for most of the game, and their special teams played a key part in keeping it that way. Alex Jennings, who had one of his best games of the season against the Northmen in the Falcons' 24-15 loss on Sept. 4, partially blocked two Petoskey punts that netted one and five yards, respectively.

Still, the Falcons and Northmen were locked in a scoreless tie at the half.

"I told the kids at halftime we had 24 minutes to make a play," Pratley said. "The way our defense and special teams were playing there was no way they were going to score.

"On offense we just needed to make one play, and we got that one play."

That one play came on Ogemaw's first possession of the second half. The Northmen were well aware of receiver Kyle Bellor's penchant for big plays and were prepared for the sideline fades that he and John Hughes so frequently hooked up on through the season.

What they weren't ready for was Sheldon Roberto making the pass on a halfback option. A wide-open Bellor took Roberto's pass in stride and sprinted through the rain for the 46-yard touchdown. Tyler Brindley's diving grab of Hughes' conversion pass made it 8-0.

From there the Falcons ground out just enough yards in the windblown downpour to keep Petoskey's backs to the wall. A couple of fumbles deep in Petoskey territory prevented more scoring, but the defense did the rest.

Brindley fumbled on the Northmen's 10-yard line late in the third quarter, but immediately responded with two tackles of Petoskey running back James Proctor to force a three-and-out.

"The fumble definitely bothered me," he said. "I really just wanted to make up for it on D.

"Our class had never won a playoff game, so that was a great goal for us to try and get."

Hughes, who led the Falcons with 74 yards on 20 carries, also fumbled deep in Petoskey territory with 3:30 left in the game to give the Northmen one final chance to tie it. But Anthony Zettel crushed Petoskey quarterback Mike Pattullo on one of his team's few passing plays of the night, and Jennings picked off the off-target throw to secure the win.

Proctor finished with 73 yards on 15 carries, while Mike Suter, returning after missing three games due to an injury, added 52 yards on 19 carries for Petoskey.

Bellor had 57 yards on three catches and Jennings had two catches for 45 yards. Hughes completed 4-of-12 passes for 46 yards, all in the first half.

The Falcons (9-1) host next week's district title contest with Escanaba.
