GAYLORD - Feb. 16, 2008 -
Ogemaw Heights' wrestling season may be over from a team perspective, but five Falcons will continue on after surviving Saturday's individual district tournament and advancing to next weekend's individual regional. Three John Glenn wrestlers also advanced out of district competition.
Andrew Funsch (130 pounds) had the top finish for the Falcons, taking second place in his weight class. Chris Hebert (119), Michael Lentz (140), Drake Killinger (152) and Anthony Carollo also earned regional medals.
Glenn, which held several wrestlers out due to injury, boasted district champions in Brandon Wrzesinski (171) and Justin LaFlure (189), with Kooper Martinez (103) taking third.
Funsch advanced to the championship match with a pin and a 5-0 decision over Chad McClain over Mt. Pleasant, but lost 6-2 to Kegan Arthur in the final match.
Hebert's lone loss was a 6-5 decision to Marquis McLean of Clio, an improvement over a 10-4 defeat to McLean during Wednesday's team district match. McLean went on to win the district title, while Hebert took a 13-0 major decision over Randy McNess of North Branch before winning his third-place match by default.
Drake Killinger lost 9-7 in his semifinal match but came back to pin Flint Beecher's Caleb Price and Sault Ste. Marie's Derek Horde to finish third.
Carollo's one loss was a 3-2 decision to Marquette's Abe Afshar, but won a 4-1 decision over Kyle Keeling and pinned Mt. Pleasant's Joel Freebury in the third-place match after having beaten him 3-2 earlier in the day.
Lentz overcame an injury that kept him out of Wednesday's match to pin Clio's Keith Shriner and defeat Glenn's John Gaiser 15-1. Having qualified for the regional round, Lentz defaulted the third-place match and finished fourth.
Also winning matches but not advancing were Masen Henretta (103) and Matt Keeton (145).
For Glenn, Wrzesinski stayed unbeaten for the year with a pair of pins over Gaylord wrestlers and a 9-4 championship match decision over Sault Ste. Marie's Nicholas Odbert.
Survivors of Saturday's tourney advance to next Saturday's regional at Linden. The top four finishers from each weight class qualify for the individual state finals March 6-8 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
LaFlure had a pair of technical fall victories, including in the championship match over Afshar, and a pin in his three matches.
Martinez went 4-1 for the day, including a pin of Casimer Strzynski in the third-place match. Also winning matches but not advancing were Steve Guigar (112), D.J. Lapan (130), Chris Pappas (135), John Gaiser (140) and Kyle Knox (152).
