WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT - Feb. 14, 2008 - Ogemaw Heights built a 12-point third-quarter lead, but Julie Janish wasn't about to go down in her last home basketball game.
The Whittemore-Prescott senior led the Cardinals to a come-from-behind, 76-70 overtime victory while recording a triple-double, including 36 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.
"(Janish) shot absolutely outstanding," said Ogemaw Heights coach Tim Hansen. "You could tell that she had something to prove after the first game of the season when we defended her quite well and 'contained' her. She proved it tonight.
"It seemed like every time she touched the ball she made a basket."
Kristi Killackey came up big for the Falcons, scoring 13 points in the first half and adding six more in the third quarter as Ogemaw expanded its lead.
But Janish, "held" to 12 in the first half, scored 12 in the fourth quarter alone as the Cards tied the game at 67-67 to force overtime.
"I'm really proud of our girls," said W-P coach Barb Janish. "They dug deep and pulled this one out."
"We got tentative (late)," Hansen said. "W-P chipped away and got it close down the stretch and we haven't been in that type of situation this year. "Hopefully we learned a lesson about stepping up and playing with confidence."
Janish added six points in overtime and Sharesse King drained a 3-pointer, while Ashley Thompson's trey provided Ogemaw's only points of the extra period.
King kept W-P (14-5, 7-5 NEMC) in the game with one of her hot shooting streaks, scoring nine of her 19 points in the opening eight minutes. Cory Durham added six rebounds and five blocked shots.
Killackey finished with a career-high 22 for the Falcons (8-11, 4-7), with Thompson adding 17 and Colleen Wren 16.
On the whole, Hansen was pleased with his team's effort, despite the loss.
"The kids have had some adversity to overcome recently," he said. "Tonight they rose above it and played their hearts out. I'm really proud of their effort tonight and the fact that they came together as a team more than at any other point this season." |
