OSCODA - Dec, 21, 2007 - Standish-Sterling took a bit to shake off its big loss to Saginaw Nouvel, but eventually found its stride Friday in coming back to earn a road win at Oscoda, 52-35.
The Owls, hoping to spring a big upset, took a 12-6 lead after one quarter and despite the Panthers getting back on track in the second period, trailed just 25-20 at the half.
"Oscoda played a great first half," said SSC coach Kevin King. "We played real well in the middle quarters. I'm not sure if it was the Nouvel game, or the Friday before the holidays or having some kids sick, but we didn't start out well. Kayla Hilyard also got into foul trouble real quick, and as she goes, we go."
"Hopefully with the break we'll start feeling better."
Lindsay Nelson, who led all scorers with 22 points, broke out for 13 in the second period as the Panthers took the lead. Alyssa White then chipped in with eight of her 12 in the third quarter as the Panthers went on a 17-4 run to break the game open.
Hilyard ended up scoring eight points, and freshman Christina Proulx, who missed the first several games recovering from a volleyball injury, scored seven points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Heather Patterson scored 12 points to lead the Owls (2-6, 0-3 NEMC).
The Panthers (5-2, 3-0) have a mid-break contest at Gladwin on Friday, Dec. 28, opening with a 1 p.m. JV game.
