OGEMAW HEIGHTS - Nov. 30, 2007 - Ogemaw Heights girls basketball coach Tim Hansen had been concerned that most of last season's scoring and rebounding power had graduated.
Though most coaches are prone to worry, Hansen has to be feeling a little better after Friday's season-opening 82-30 victory over Oscoda. The Falcons hadn't scored as many points in several years, much less in their opener.
The Falcons, who averaged a shade under 39 points a game last year, exceeded that total by halftime as they raced to a 47-19 lead as eight players scored in the first two quarters. Colleen Wren scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half, and Ashley Thompson and Keshia Allen each matched her total with 14 points apiece, with Hanna Morrell and Kristi Killackey adding 10 apiece.
The Owls, struggling without injured point guard Heather Spenceley, put up 14 points in the second quarter but had trouble finding the hoop most of the night. A 6-of-19 night from the free throw line didn't help.
Megan Zarachowicz and Abby Samotis each scored six points to lead the Owls (1-2, 0-1 North East Michigan Conference).
Ogemaw (1-0, 1-0 NEMC) travels to John Glenn on Tuesday for a game that will not count in the league standings.
