OGEMAW HEIGHTS - Jan. 18, 2008 - Ogemaw Heights' Pete VanOosten scored his 1,000th career point Friday as Ogemaw Heights defeated Oscoda 65-26 in a North East Michigan Conference boys basketball contest.
The victory gave the Falcons a two-game lead atop the NEMC as the other contenders spent the week knocking each other off. Standish-Sterling defeated Tawas Area on Wednesday, then turned around and lost 60-53 to Pinconning on Friday. Tawas, Pinny and SSC all have two league losses, while the Falcons got through the first half of their league schedule at 6-0.
Friday's game was competitive through one quarter as the Falcons took a 17-11 lead. VanOosten scored seven points in the quarter, including a triple that put him at 1,001 points. The game was stopped briefly to recognize the milestone. He likely could have reached that number much earlier in his four-year varsity career, but for the fact he hasn't run up big numbers in blowout games.
Ogemaw pulled away in the second quarter to a 33-16 halftime lead. Adam Dettmer scored 10 of the Owls' 16 points.
Any hopes the Owls (5-5, 1-5 NEMC) had of getting back in the game were put to rest by a 23-5 Ogemaw run in the third quarter.
Dettmer led all scorers with 16 points, but no other Owl had more than three.
VanOosten finished with 15, Kyle Dantzer had 10, including eight in the first quarter, and Alex Rose added nine.
The Falcons (10-1, 6-0) return to action Tuesday at Gladwin, where they suffered their lone defeat of the season in the championship game of the Flying G's holiday tournament. On Friday, Ogemaw plays another key NEMC contest at Standish-Sterling.
