STANDISH-STERLING - Standish-Sterling's girls track and field team got a dominant performance out of thrower Ashlyn Gulvas on Saturday, leading the Panthers to a sixth-place regional finish.

Frankenmuth easily won the region with 121 points to outdistance second-place Hemlock (77) by 44 points.

SSC finished with 48 points, while Tawas Area was eighth with 32 and Oscoda was 14th with 20.

Gulvas won regional titles in both the discus in and the shot put. Gulvas' throw in the discus of 140-6 was 13 feet better than the second-place finisher and 35 feet better than the state-qualifying standard of 105-10.

The win in the shot put didn't come so easily. Gulvas' early throws in the 38 and 39 foot range got her over the state-qualifying distance of 34-7, but she trailed Frankenmuth's Samantha Cormier by three feet heading into her final throw as Cormier had recorded a toss of 42-4. Gulvas' final throw of 44-2 was second only to her area record throw of over 45 feet earlier in the season and enabled her to take the top seed into the May 31 state finals. She also holds the top seed in the discus.

Cormier won the state shot put title a year ago, with Gulvas taking second.

Oscoda's Ashley Schonfeld was the only other NEMC athlete to earn a state finals berth, winning the 300 hurdles with a time of 48.56.

Other medallists for SSC were Allison Collier in the pole vault (3rd, 7-6); Ashley Pickvet, Christina Proulx, Alyssa Pruder and Ashley White in the 4x800 relay (7th, 11:08.17); Chelsea Szostak in the 100 hurdles (6th, 17.69) and 300 hurdles (6th, 50.05); Chelsea Szostak, Shaina Szostak, Jessica Cousins and Katie Ouillette in the 4x200 relay (6th, 1:51.3); Szostak, Szostak, Jessica Cousins and Sarah Cousins in the 4x100 relay (8th, 55.41); Ouillette in the 400 (4th, 1:02.88); Szostak, Szostak, Ouillette and Ashlyn Gulvas in the 4x400 relay (3rd, 4:18.44).

Medallists for Tawas were Kendra Cooley in the discus (8th, 86-9); Richelle Payea in the long jump (7th, 14-8); Olivia Bolen, Chelsea Smith, Emily Short and Brittany Combs in the 4x800 relay (8th, 11:13.40); Dana Kolnitys in the 100 (5th, 13.71) and 200 (4th, 27.69); Amy Johnson, Katie Challenger, Shelby Benoit and Chelsea Wojahn in the 4x200 relay (8th, 1:59.07); Short in the 1600 (6th, 5:52.86) and 3200 (5th, 12:58.07); Smith in the 1600 (8th, 5:56.66) and 3200 (4th, 12:52.75); the 4x400 relay (6th, 54.85); and Wojahn in the 200 (7th, 28.79).

Oscoda's medallists were Megan Zarachowicz in the high jump (3rd, 4-11); Jeri Carl in the shot put (5th, 33-4); and Schonfeld in the 100 (6th, 14.44).

SSC, Tawas and Oscoda are at Ogemaw Heights on Wednesday, May 21 for the NEMC league finals meet.
