WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT - May 12, 2008 - Not much should be surprising when a pair of teams that have been through as many ups and downs this season as Whittemore-Prescott and Ogemaw Heights get together.
Still, few would have predicted the Cardinals' 13-3, 11-4 sweep over Ogemaw, considering how well the Falcons had played the previous week, and that W-P was playing its sixth and seventh games in a five-day period.
Such stretches hadn't treated W-P well earlier in the year, but Monday saw the Cards hitting the ball well, Julie Janish pitching well enough to win and the Falcons helping out with errors that led to a couple of big W-P innings.
"We played extremely well for a young team that was playing (under those circumstances)," said W-P coach Sam Harrison. "We played with a lot of enthusiasm and energy and are starting to do the little things right that we have been talking about since March."
In the opener, Ashley Thompson belted an RBI triple and later scored in the third inning to give Ogemaw a 3-2 lead. But that didn't last long as W-P scored seven runs in the third inning on four hits, two walks and a pair of passed balls. Janish's bases-loaded triple provided the biggest hit of the inning.
The Cards then finished the game off in the bottom of the fifth on Sharesse King's grand slam that gave W-P a 10-run lead.
King finished with two home runs and six RBIs in the game with Janish adding three hits and Jordan Maxwell two. Janish allowed six hits and two walks while striking out six to pick up the win. Colleen Wren took the loss for the Falcons.
In the second game, the Falcons were still in it late as they scored three runs in the sixth inning to pull to within 5-4.
As in the first game, W-P answered that rally with a big inning, scoring six in the bottom of the frame to break the game open. The Falcons committed five errors in the inning and Janish had a double and Ashley Tanner a two-run single in the game-clinching rally.
Janish had four hits, including a double, and Maxwell again had two hits for the Cards. Tanner and Kelsey Sievers each had two RBIs. Janish again picked up the win, allowing seven hits and eight walks and striking out five.
Thompson and Kathy Erickson each had two hits for the Falcons. Erickson took the loss in the pitching circle.
W-P and Ogemaw both finished 6-6 in NEMC play in a three-way tie with John Glenn for fourth place in the league, three games behind 22-time champion Pinconning.
W-P (18-8 overall) has a week-long break before hosting Beaverton on May 19 while Ogemaw (15-10) plays Kalkaska on Thursday.
