W-P wins home tourney

WHITTEMORE-PRESCOTT - May 10, 2008 - Whittemore-Prescott's young softball team has been anything but consistent this season. This weekend's home round-robin tournament definitely had the Cards on the upswing as they swept Arenac Eastern, Oscoda and Posen to win the their home tournament.

W-P topped Eastern 13-3 in the opening game on Friday, edged Oscoda 3-1 and then handed Posen, the North Star League leaders, a 16-2 defeat in what amounted to the title game.

Arenac Eastern lost 8-3 to Posen and defeated Oscoda 3-1 in its other games, while Posen also defeated Oscoda.

"I'm happy that we have been more consistent hitting the ball lately," said W-P coach Sam Harrison. "Assistant coach Walt Harrison has done an outstanding job of bringing along our younger players when it comes to hitting. We still need to improve our hustle and decision-making."

In Friday's opening game, Cortney Bork had a single, two doubles and a triple and drove in six runs to lead the Cardinals' offense. Julie Janish added three hits and Ashley Tanner had two hits and drove in a run. W-P broke the game open with a seven-run third inning.

Carrie Fink had two hits while Jamie Rowbottom and Ashley Groh each had one for AE. Fink started and pitched the first three innings in taking the loss.

W-P came back Saturday morning to edge Oscoda 3-1 as Janish scattered eight hits and one walk while striking out six.  A two-run first inning proved to be all the Cards needed.

Janish and Kelsey Sievers each had two hits for the Cards.

The Cardinals took on a Posen squad that entered the contest with a 21-3 record and scored four runs in each of the first three innings to take control of the game.

The Vikings came back with single runs in the first an third innings, but W-P also added two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game after five innings.

Janish earned the win, allowing two unearned runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out four.

"We are improving at fundamentals, we are getting bunts down, as well as fielding and throwing balls more consistently," Harrison said. "The sophomores are playing like juniors and that is necessary if  we expect to compete in districts."

Sharesse king had three hits and two RBIs, Janish had two hits and two RBIs, Jasman added two hits and three RBIs, and Bork continued her clutch hitting with a double and four RBIs on the day.

Christina Bednarski had three hits, including two doubles, for the Vikings.

Arenac Eastern got on the board quickly in its 3-1 victory over Oscoda as Rowbottom and Fink singled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on Sherri Rousse's single.

Briana Dery singled and later scored on Groh's sacrifice bunt. The Eagles also aided their cause by throwing out three Oscoda runners on the basepaths.

Fink earned the win, allowing one unearned run on six hits, walking two and striking out six.

The Eagles also lost 8-3 to Posen. Rousse, Briana Dery, Rowbottom, Fink, Lindsay Nelson and Emma Young each had hits. Four AE errors helped Posen add to its total. Shawna Tacey started and took the loss.
