OSCODA - Apr. 8, 2008 - Cold weather didn't do much to slow down the Oscoda softball team in Tuesday's season-opener at home against Hale as the Owls rang up 30 runs in a 15-0, three-inning victory and a 15-4 five-inning triumph.
Heather Patterson hat a home run and three RBIs and Heather Spenceley added a two-run triple in support of Nikki Shugart's one-hitter to key the opening-game win for the Owls.
The Owls put the game away with a 12-run second inning.
Dana Kitchen added a double, Abby Samotis stole four bases and Shugart and Riley Shelton each had three steals for Oscoda.
Rachel Maher had the Eagles' lone hit.
Hale actually led briefly in the second game, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. The Eagles were still in the game, trailing 5-4 in the third inning, when Oscoda unleashed a 10-run onslaught to put it out of reach.
Leila Cotton and Heather Spenceley each had two-run home runs in the inning and Jenny Nedo added a pair of doubles to pace the Oscoda attack.
Abby Samotis pitched the first three innings to earn the win, then as the Owls' catcher ended the game by picking a Hale baserunner off third base.
Kassie Johnson had two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles, and Amanda Hendrix added an RBI single.
Lauryn Springsteen pitched both games for Hale (0-2).
