BULLOCK CREEK - Apr. 19, 2008 - The Ogemaw Heights softball team got off to a flying start at Saturday's Bullock Creek Invitationa, but after topping Midland 13-3 in their opening game were only able to pick up a total of five hits in their final two games.
The Falcons lost to North Branch 1-0 in the second game despite a no-hitter pitched by Kate Dombrowski, then finished the day with a 7-0 loss to Bullock Creek.
"We played very well against Class A Midland," said Falcon coach Chuck Wren. "Great intensity level. North Branch is a very good team that eventually won the tournament.
"We lost our intensity level against Bullock Creek. My team needs to find a way to get the job done; that will come with experience -- 'trial by fire' learning."
Colleen Wren pitched the first 2-2/3 innings against Midland to pick up the win, allowing no earned runs on five hits and five walks while striking out four.
Jenna Zettel had a huge game at the plate with four hits, including a pair of doubles, and six RBIs.
The Falcons started the day with a six-run first inning, and after Midland pulled to within 6-3 in the third inning, put the game with three-runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.
Against North Branch, the Falcons lost 1-0 despite Dombrowski's no-hitter. Dombrowski pitched the final 2-1/3 innings against Midland, also without allowing a hit, but a hit batsman to lead off the first inning came back to haunt the Falcons. An error eventually allowed the North Branch baserunner to score, and though the Falcons scratched out three hits in the game, were never able to get a runner past second base.
Wren, Lauren Gillette and Angela Carollo each had singles for the Falcons. Dombrowski retired the final 17 North Branch bats in order in the six-inning game.
Bullock Creek put the final game of the day away early, scoring four times in the first as the Falcons had a rough inning in the field.
Four of the Lancers' seven runs in the game were unearned.
Kathy Erickson took the loss and allowed eight hits and five walks, striking out three.
Emily Sheltrown had a double and Zettel had a single for the Falcons' only hits.
