Ogemaw Heights 3-0, Bay City All Saints 1-9

BAY CITY - Apr. 17, 2008 - The Ogemaw Heights softball team hopes this is a sign of things to come.

The Falcons traveled to Bay City on Thursday to take on an All Saints squad that is top-ranked in Division 4, and very well could have won a state title last year had it not run into the Cabrini juggernaut that gave up only one run last season and just last week had two-plus season, 80-game win streak snapped.

The Falcons upset All Saints 3-0 in the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader before falling 9-1 in the second game.

"It's very rewarding to beat the No. 1 team in (Div. 4), giving them their first loss on their field," said Ogemaw coach Chuck Wren. "The showed a lot of composure in the late innings."

Colleen Wren spun a three-hit shutout at the Cougars, walking two and striking out 10. Meanwhile, the Falcon bats got to All Saints ace Louise Rezmer for nine hits, including back-to-back RBI hits -- a single by Lauren Gillette and a double by Jenna Zettel -- to give Ogemaw a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

Wren scored the third run in the fifth inning after leading off with a double, taking third on Ashley Thompson's sacrifice and scoring on a passed ball.

All Saints threatened to take the lead in the fourth inning as it had two on base with one out, but Wren struck out the side and allowed just one baserunner in the final three innings.

"Colleen pitched very well and the defense played solid behind her," Chuck Wren said. "They showed a lot of composure in the late innings."

All Saints kicked up its heels in the second game, scoring three runs in the first inning and building a 5-0 lead before the Falcons scored on Zettel's RBI single in the third. Rezmer earned the win for All Saints, allowing four hits and three walks while striking out 12.

Zettel's two hits led the Falcon offense, while Kate Dombrowski started and took the loss.

The Falcons (4-2) face another tough customer Monday when they play at 21-time defending NEMC champ Pinconning.
