STANDISH-STERLING - May 5, 2008 - John Glenn showed a propensity for scoring seventh-inning runs at Standish-Sterling on Monday, but thanks to a seventh-inning rally of their own the Panthers were able to salvage a split with the Bobcats.
Glenn snapped a 3-3 tie with two runs in the seventh inning of the opener to take a 5-3 victory. In the nightcap, the Bobcats scored twice in the seventh to tie the game, but Ryan Donahue's single to right field scored Jason Kandal with the game-winner to key a 4-3 victory.
"Donahue's been hitting the ball well," said SSC coach Rod Russell. "The kids never gave up, and he was the right man at the right time."
The Panthers seemed to have things under control as they headed into the seventh inning with a 3-1 lead and Kenny Turner cruising with a two-hitter.
But Glenn got two on with one out in the seventh, and Russell went to Brad Bialobrzeski, who hadn't pitched since early in the season thanks to an injury.
Bialobrzeski got the first out -- a sacrifice fly -- but a missed cutoff allowed Glenn's other baserunner to take third.
That set the stage for a safety squeeze bunt that tied the game before Bialobrzeski recorded a strikeout to keep the game tied.
"We were playing back, and the kid made a great bunt," Russell said. "The big problem on that was not hitting the cutoff."
In the bottom of the seventh, Kandal walked and stole second, and with two outs Kevin Goretcki was hit on the helmet with a pitch. Donahue's base hit to right scored easily scored Kandal with the winning run.
"Turner threw a phenomenal game," Russell said. "And it was great to have Brad back in there. He threw well; we need him."
Jordan Schumann threw well in defeat for Glenn, allowing seven hits and five walks while striking out nine.
Turner gave up three hits and walked three with five strikeouts, but Bialobrzeski got the win with his 2/3 inning of relief.
Donahue also had a triple and Bialobrzeski had two hits, including a double.
In the opener, Jordan Snider struck out 14 Panthers while earning the win for Glenn, but the game wasn't decided until the Bobcats scored two runs with two outs in the seventh inning.
"Snider is one of the best we've seen this year," Russell said. "He spotted his fastball well and threw a nice curve. I still thought we hit the ball well and we had our chances; we just took too many third strikes."
Dewey Milan took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits and five walks while striking out one.
Donahue had two hits and two RBIs and Goretcki had two hits in the opener.
