May 3, 2008 - Hillman was the big winner in Saturday's Oscoda Invitational, defeating Hale in one semifinal and topping Whittemore-Prescott in the championship of the tourney.
W-P topped Oscoda 9-5 in the other semifinal, while the Owls went on to drill Hale 18-2 in the consolation contest.
The Cardinals briefly took a 1-0 lead in the championship contest against Hillman, but the 15-1 Tigers took control with four runs in the first inning, one in the second and two in the third to take a 7-2 lead.
Dylan DeBoever started and took the loss, pitching the first three innings. Tristan Kohlhoff pitched four innings in relief, allowing three hits and three runs while walking two and striking out five.
"Hillman came out smoking with their bats," said W-P coach Ed Mervyn. "Tristan did a nice job in relief."
DeBoever, Kyle Saunders and Kevin DuPuis had the Cards' (4-13) hits.
W-P used a six-run third inning to earn its way into the title contest in its 9-5 victory over Oscoda.
Kyle Hucul pitched the first four innings for the win, allowing five hits and one run while striking out one. Saunders pitched the final three innings in relief.
DeBoever had three hits, with Saunders, DuPuis and Aaron Clare adding two hits each. Clare had two RBIs and Mark Jakubik had an RBI single in the big third inning.
"It was great to see some key hits," Mervyn said.
Nick Withrow started and took the loss for the Owls. Withrow had two doubles on offense for the Owls and Mike Lamrock added a triple.
Oscoda (11-11) came back to rip Hale 18-2 in the third place game, led by Jason Jimenez's two hits and five RBIs. The Owls scored 13 runs in the second inning to turn it into a laugher. Chuck Dumaresq hurled a two-hitter, allowing three walks and striking out five in the three-inning game.
Will Hjorth took the loss, while Roy Bernard and Kyle Wilson had hits for the Eagles (6-10).
