OGEMAW HEIGHTS - Apr. 24, 2008 - Ogemaw Heights' baseball team took nothing for granted Thursday and finished one of its tougher stretches of the season with a 10-0 and 15-0 sweep of Oscoda in a North East Michigan Conference doubleheader.
The Falcons got a one-hitter from Rick Dodridge and Josh Gildner in the five-inning first game. Dodridge, who Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace limited in the number of pitches he would throw, pitched four innings and struck out seven, and Gildner finished up with one hitless inning of work.
"At least we only struck out seven times and we got a hit off Dodridge," said Oscoda coach Bob Skodack.
Ten different Falcons scored in the first game. Chris Bones and Blaine Powley each had two hits and two stolen bases in the opener.
"The seniors are on their way to Florida (the day after the game) but we needed to make sure their minds were here for two more games," Peace said. "Chris had a good night with the bat. He stayed in his approach and took a couple balls the other way, even after fouling one off his face."
Nick Withrow absorbed his first loss of the season for the Owls.
The Falcons put the second game away early with a nine-run first inning. Bones had another big game with two hits and three RBIs, while Nick Thorson and Kelvin Page each had triples and Jake Wangler had two RBIs.
Anthony Betancourt pitched the first two innings for the win, with Page and Andrew Funsch finishing up in the four-inning contest.
Tyler Little took the loss for the Owls (9-5, 2-2 NEMC).
Ogemaw (11-4, 5-1) doesn't play again until May 2, then finishes up its NEMC schedule with three league doubleheaders in eight days.
"We'll have to be ready to go out and compete right away (after the senior trip) if we want to battle for the championship," Peace said.
