BAY CITY - Apr. 17, 2008 - Ogemaw Heights needed to come from behind to defeat Bay City All Saints 7-6 in the opening game of Thursday's doubleheader, then scored three runs in the sixth inning of a tie ballgame to claim a 5-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Cougars knocked around Falcon pitcher Eric Noble for five runs in the first inning, but Noble settled down and didn't give up a run before giving way to Josh Gildner in the fifth inning.
Gildner went the rest of the way, allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts in 2-1/3 innings of relief.
The Falcons scored twice in the sixth inning to snap a 5-5 tie.
"Michael Noffsinger di a really nice job of setting the table," said Ogemaw coach Jeremiah Peace. "In the sixth he followed Funsch's sacrifice bunt with a single to score Blaine (Powley) and put us ahead."
Noffsinger followed with a stolen base, then took what Peace called "a great secondary" lead off second on an Aaron Kihn grounder to short. When the shortstop's throw was high to first base, Noffsinger raced home and scored while the defender was trying to find the bag.
"That won us the game, as it turned out," Peace said, as All Saints scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a one-run game.
Powley hurled a complete game five-hitter in the second contest and hit a two-run single in the sixth to cap the Falcons' three-run rally.
With the score tied at 2-2 in the sixth, Kelvin Page brought home Nick Thorson on a sacrificd squeeze play.
"Blaine has been working through a sore arm, so we weren't sure how much we'd get from him" Peace said. "We got six good innings.
"Afterward we talked about how it was a great team night because it was a total team effort," Peace added. We had six sac bunts, a couple groundballs to score runs and everybody chipped in. Jameson, Bones, Kyle Scott, Noble and Gildner all stepped up to help us out."
Rick Dodridge had three hits in the first game, while Noffsinger and Aaron Kihn each had two hits. Both of Kihn's were doubles.
Dodridge had two more hits in the second game and Powley had two hits with three RBIs.
"It was great to have guys get a chance and take advantage of it," Peace said. "As long as they keep giving us wins for scoring mroe runs than the other team, even if it's just one, we'll take them."
Ogemaw (6-0) travels to Pinconning in for a critical NEMC doubleheader on Monday.
